LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– Police say a man is in custody after a police chase that started in Richmond and ended on Richmond Road in Lexington.
The chase was initiated by Richmond Police going north on I-75 to Lexington. Officers say the vehicle exited the interstate at the Athens Boonesboro exit. The vehicle ended up crashing near the Texas Roadhouse near Richmond Road and Man o’ War. The suspect then took off running behind the restaurant where police say he was arrested.
Police say that it all started when a woman called them saying that a man had stolen her car with her stepchild inside. The child’s aunt says that the 14-year-old girl was not hurt.
“She’s a little, of course, she’s a little nervous, she just went through a high-speed chase but she’s been doing okay as of right now,” said the girl’s aunt Anna Trent.
The teenager has been taken to the police department to tell officers about what happened.
Richmond Police say that the man who was arrested is the teen’s mother’s boyfriend, 33-year-old Thomas Oxendine, of Lexington.
They tell LEX 18 that all three of them were in the car when the mother and Oxendine got into an argument. They pulled into the Shell gas station on Merrick Drive in Madison County.
Police say that as the mother went inside of the gas station, Oxendine got in the driver’s seat and drove off with the teen inside. Police say the man had a pellet gun on him.
Oxendine was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, kidnapping-minor, wanton endangerment 1st degree, fleeing or evading police 1st degree, tampering with physical evidence, reckless driving, and speeding.
